Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey
Council Member

Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey is a public health physician and globally recognised healthcare quality and health systems leader with extensive expertise in quality improvement, health systems strengthening, maternal and child health, and large-scale programme design and delivery across Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia and beyond. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s National Vaccine Institute, where he leads efforts to advance the country’s vaccine development, manufacturing and health security agenda.

Prior to this role, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey served as Vice President, Global, at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), providing strategic, technical, and operational leadership across multiple regions. There he oversaw the Quality portfolio under USAID’s flagship Local Health Systems Sustainability (LHSS) project spanning 52 priority countries, and served as IHI’s key lead on the MOMENTUM Country & Global Leadership (MCGL) Project. Earlier, as Executive Director and Head of the Africa Region, he led IHI’s growing portfolio across the continent. He is best known in Ghana for leading Project Fives Alive!, a nationwide quality improvement initiative that scaled across more than 200 public sector hospitals and contributed to a significant reduction in child deaths.

A trained Quality Improvement Advisor and a Fellow of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua), Dr. Sodzi-Tettey was the first African elected to ISQua’s governing Board. In addition to his current role at the Centre for Social Justice as a Council Member, he chairs the Board of Nyaho Medical Centre and serves on the Board of the Ubora Quality Institute. He has previously served on the boards of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority and the governing Council of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, and is a past Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association. He is a 2017 Rockefeller Global Fellow for Social Innovation and a recipient of the Ghana Medical Association’s Special Commendation Award for meritorious service.

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey holds an MBChB from the University of Ghana Medical School and a Master of Public Health (Health Policy, Planning & Management) from the University of Ghana. A visionary leader, skilled healthcare improver and articulate communicator, he is a committed advocate for social justice who writes regularly on health and sociopolitical issues, championing “stronger systems, greater leaders, and better outcomes to spur Africa’s rebirth.”
